A Bonus for Airline Employees

Months before September 11th, airlines were asking their employee groups to make wage and benefit cuts to help "save" the faltering companies. After September 11th, things only got worse. Thousands of airline employees have faced layoffs, job loss, or the insecurity of knowing that their jobs are not secure anymore. Airline executives, in order to avoid bankruptcy, have asked employees to take even more of a pay cut. After all: no company, no job. Some employees agreed to make concessions, others pointed out that other companies tried the same thing, and that didn't save their employees jobs. There really was no choice.

The Nitty-Gritty

While the airlines themselves received huge bailouts from the government after September 11th, Congress seemed unconcerned about the fate of the thousands of airline workers.

Many people who flew before 9/11 are now hesitant to get on a plane at all. While airport safety is obviously necessary, the new security requirements have made the airport hassle three times worse then previously. Skyrocketing gas prices have caused ticket prices to rise. This means fewer passengers, fewer planes, and fewer jobs in the airline industry, with employees paying the biggest price.

Couldn't these workers have gotten other jobs? After all, the unemployment rate is low. Jobs are plentiful, right? Not exactly. The US department of Labor reported that 7 of the 10 jobs expected to grow most rapidly until 2012 pay less than $13.25 an hour - some much less. The seven top fields are: retail sales clerk, customer service representative, food service worker, cashier, janitor, nurse's aide, and hospital orderly. Many laid off airline mechanics where averaging around $31 an hour. Many are family men in their 30s and 40s. Now, the jobs they are offered are well below their skill level and far below the wages they need to pay their bills. Many are worried they will have to file for personal bankruptcy - but with no federal bailout to save them.

A Bonus

In the title of the article, we mentioned a bonus for airline employees. That means current and former employees. There is an easy way to make up for the deficit in your budget. You can do it wherever you are, whenever you want. You will be in control of how much you work and how much you make. You may call it a home business, but the truth is that you can carry it wherever you want. All you need is a computer with an Internet connection, and a phone. It is an answer that has eased the minds of hundreds of people in situations like yours.
