Three small sealed cans of Frito-Lay Bean Dip were confiscated by Transportation Security Agents at Los Angeles International Airport this week. The agents considered the bean dip a "paste" and dangerous according to the agent and their supervisors.

Harris and Patricia Angell were flying from LAX to New York and on to US Virgin Islands where they live. The Angells are originally from Southern California and love Mexican food. They cannot get bean dip on island. Harris brings a few cans back when he visits California during the holidays. He especially wanted them for the playoff football games and Super Bowl.

The Angells originally packed the bean dip in their checked luggage. Their checked luggage was over by a pound or so, and they were told to remove something. They removed the bean dip and placed the cans in their carry-on luggage. The Ticket Agent watched and gave no warning.

At the security check point, the TSA agent pulled the cans and asked another TSA agent about them but neither knew anything. The first agent checked with a supervisor. Jokes were made that one agent had some chips in the back and we could all have a party. The Angells were amenable to that rather than lose the bean dip, but the agent did not allow that either. The first agent came back and apologetically told the Angells that they could not take their bean dip in their carry-on. It was a "PASTE". They could check it, but their bags were already in process. They could give it to someone to keep or mail for them, but the line was about 100 deep and their party had left. Many people watched while the cans were thrown into the trash bucket!

Harris Angell quipped that he could just hear the comedy shows making remarks like, "Bean Dip Explosive!" "Government now protecting us from bean dip!" "Bean Dip Dangerous!" "Bean Dip a Terrorist Threat!" Angell added and laughed, "Perhaps, we could have packed it in three ounce jars in a one quart bag, eaten it all on the plane in closed quarters. Then the airlines would have a larger problem, toxic gas!"

This may just be a Florida thing. Airboat rides are a blast, pun intended.

The person who first dreamt up the idea of mounting a big block motor to the back of a flat bottom boat and then mounting an airplane propeller directly to the motor was one very disturbed individual. But he sure knew how to have a good time!

All around the peninsula of Florida you can find someone who is selling airboat rides. In some parts of the state you can go to boat launches where you can hitch a ride without a reservation. Strapping yourself into one of these boats is some of the best fun you can have without getting in trouble with the law.

A Trip you won't Forget

One of the best ways to see the wildlife of Florida is from the seat of an airboat. With all the noise that these boats put out you won't sneak up on anything or anyone. However, you will see wildlife that won't see anywhere else on a single trip. On a recent trip my wife and I took on it we saw hundreds of alligators, turtles and bald eagles. We saw hawks, osprey and other birds of prey.

Several times during the trip our guide would drive it up the side of the river and spin it around so the airboat was pointed back at the water. He would stop the engine and let things settle down a bit. As he did, the wildlife would come out of hiding. Dozens and dozens of alligators would pop their heads up to see what was happening. Turtles and other wildlife would appear in the water and on land.

On one of these stops we got out and enjoyed a long break and picnic lunch. Our airboat came equipped with coolers for drinks and places to store our picnic basket. Taking a break to stretch our legs and eat our lunch was a great time to enjoy nature and have dozens of alligators pop up in the river to watch us eat.

Being from Florida, my wife and I have a respect for alligators but are not so afraid that we can't enjoy ourselves. With our respect comes a healthy desire to not be a meal for one of these descendants of the dinosaurs. We know not to feed them or leave anything behind that would make them too curious for the next visitor.

It might have to do with the fact that I fly very little, but I still cannot understand the big need that people have for in-flight service. Or maybe it is the fact that some people are actually flying on other people's money that causes them to ignore the fact that expensive flight tickets do precious other than get you from here to there.

But historically, fliers have been just that, fliers, and they want more. For instance, imagine that you are on a one-hour flight from city A to city B. And instead of the get-stuck-between-the-teeth type of poor quality candy, the aircrew serves you a large bar of exquisite Swiss chocolate. How would you feel? If you would rate this as an example of good service, you have my sympathies. I just do not understand you.

I would think that I got approx two dollars worth of benefit. That is because that is what the chocolate bar would probably cost me if I pocketed it on my way to the airport.

And it is not just about the chocolate bar. There is really a strange value that some people seem to derive from plastically smiling cabin crew. In reality I am one of those that think that the only purpose of a air-trip is to get you from point A to point B. Flights News - Luggage Restrictions Eased

New government rulings on the amount of hand luggage we can take on planes will come into effect from the 7th January 08. This change means that passengers on flights to or from one of 22 UK airports are permitted to carry on more than one item of hand luggage per person.

The one item rule has been in place since August 2006, amidst many terror threats at UK airports the government put in place many restrictions on what passengers could carry on to a plane. These restrictions brought about the one item per person rule but also the kind of item you can safely carry with you, which remains in effect.

This dictated that at one point you were not allowed to bring any liquids onto a flight. Mainly because there were fears that terrorists could bring the necessary components to assemble a bomb/weapon and assemble it in-flight.

Whilst it managed to eliminate this threat there were other groups that were affected, parents bringing small children on board were not allowed to bring pre-made drinks/food on all flights, this was a shock to parents who would be forced to pour away the bottles they had prepared for a long flight and now had no food for junior!

This ruling was relaxed slightly later on with a limit being put in place rather than an outright ban on liquids, the official limit for these items is now 100ml of each of gels, pastes, food stuffs etc.

But this change is not being rolled out at all UK airports, currently 22 UK airports will be permitting multiple hand luggage items, but some others, notably, London's Gatwick Airport will not be changing on 7/1/08 due to issues with the Department of Transport.

The Department of Transport has surveyed airports to see if they can handle the added hand luggage whilst maintaining the current added security, without adding to queues. Those that have not been able to meet this requirement, like Gatwick, require additional staff and equipment and will be delaying the introduction of this new ruling.

The airlines themselves are split over this decision though, British Airways is to permit two items of hand luggage per person, Virgin Atlantic is sticking with the policy it has had since before the August '06 changes; one item for economy and Economy Plus passengers, with allowances for laptops and handbags as well but two items of hand luggage for First Class customers.

About half an inch up your neck is another vertebra. Feel for it and get it to wiggle. Keep moving up to give each vertebra (there are seven in all) and the muscles surrounding a chance to loosen. Breath Massage

Continue the movement by bending your spine just an inchto the side. Press one foot and then the other, like a cat kneading its paws, and let the movement flow up and down your body. (You can also do this while standing at baggage claim.)

Forward Lean

Press your feet into the floor as you reach toward the ceiling with the crown of your head. Keep all this length in your spine and lean forward as though you were going to put your forehead on the seat in front of you, but only move forward 6 inches. Without bending your spine, return to sitting upright. Repeat 4 times.

Ride the Turbulence

Emphasize the effects of small turbulence with gentle sways and internal bounces to let go of unnecessary tension in your back and shoulders. Pretend you are a bobble head doll and let the muscle tightness work itself free.

Easy movements are very effective in relieving tension. Just five minutes an hour will restore vitality to your back. Car Hire: There is an excellent selection of local, national, and international car hire companies from which to choose at Malaga's Airport, which is relatively inexpensive.

In early 2004, business groups in USA, lead by the major airlines, submitted a proposal to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), to introduce in-flight use of mobile phones on all passenger aircraft. But, together with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the FAA delayed a go-ahead because "the technology could interfere with avionics and onboard electronic gear" thus potentially affecting the safety of the aircraft and passengers. Moreover, it was suggested that existing ground-based cell phone systems also could be adversely affected by transmissions from aircraft.

The debate about interference to aircraft avionics persists. In 2005, a paper from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) - appropriately entitled Unsafe at Any Airspeed? and prepared by four academics - acknowledged that "there is no definitive instance of an air accident known to have been caused by a passenger's use of an electronic device" but strongly advocated curbing the use of cell phones on aircraft in view of the proven record of interference with aircraft avionics, and concluded: "Our data and the NASA studies suggest to us that there is a clear and present danger: cell phones can render GPS instrument useless for landings."

By late 2006 things had changed, technically: new technology that addresses the issue of interference to avionics, and which is supplied by two communications companies, OnAir and GSM World, has been introduced and is now undergoing in-flight tests in Europe on selected carriers, and in Australia on QANTAS. Other airlines either showing interest or actually testing the new equipment - called the picocell - include AirBus, Air France, British Midland Airways (BMI), TAP Air Portugal, Ryan Air, and Cathay Pacific. The unknown, at this point, is the effectiveness of the picocell in nullifying the danger to GPS instruments.

A bone of contention with many travellers is the potential problem of onboard 'phone rage': the risk of paying customers getting into disputes with others who tend to talk too loud, too long or both. To some extent, the picocell will handle this problem, but only in an indirect manner: the aircrew can switch off that unit at anytime of their choosing. In the context of a cell phone bomb trigger, however, 'phone rage' is a non-issue.

Hence, while electronic interference is still a safety issue with the FCC and FAA, the all-important question remains: how to prevent any use of a mobile phone to detonate a bomb. On a train or bus, it's bad enough that some die; on a plane at 10,000 metres, everybody dies. The FAA, however, already knew in 2003 that cell phones and bombs don't go together: in its corporate Employee Response to Emergencies booklet, there is a specific reference to that effect but there is no public information about the risk of cell phones as bomb triggers.

That risk is well known. As early as 2001, a would-be terrorist attempted to blow up the Vietnamese embassy in Bangkok using a mobile phone as "a remote detonation device", according to an FBI report. It's also well known that such triggers were used in the Madrid terrorist attack, in London, in Iraq and other places around the world. In 2005, the Department of Justice (DOJ) in USA warned, "that terrorists could use cell phones as remote-controlled improvised explosive devices in the air". So everybody who wants to know, knows - especially terrorists, worldwide.

So, what more can be done to reduce the threat from cell phones as bomb triggers?

Who better to ask than the relevant players? Those most involved are: the mobile phone companies, the telecommunication suppliers, the airlines and pertinent regulatory bodies.

From online website data, it appears that four majors of the cell phone industry are: Sony-Ericsson, Motorola, Vodaphone, and Nokia as the largest. However, the only publicly available data on security and safety information is in relation to normal phone use; that is, the effects of radio-frequency (RF) waves on the brain and the continued efforts to explore other health hazards. There is nothing about the misuse of mobile phones as bomb triggers.

On the website for AirBus - in joint venture with OnAir - there's not a shred of information about any technology solution designed to prevent a terrorist using an onboard mobile phone as a remote bomb trigger. On the GSM World website - the other supplier of similar technology - it's much the same: there is everything but information pertinent to this issue.

In addition to the FCC and the FAA, regulatory agency websites in Australia were searched: Civil Aviation Safety Administration (CASA), Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts (DCITA) and Australian Communications and Media Authority. The result: absolutely no public information on the topic of mobile phones as bomb triggers.

Email enquiries to all remained largely unanswered, with only three of the phone companies responding and with only one of those claiming that the issue has "nothing to do with cell phones as such." So, is it likely that most of these people and organizations are unaware of the risk?

Perish the thought. What's more likely, instead, is that the threat is recognized; the risk is assessed as being low; safety and security procedures are viewed as more robust since 9/11; and crucially, though extremists keep trying to blow up aircraft, nobody has succeeded yet in actualizing our collective nightmare with a cell phone - in colloquial terms, it ain't happened yet on a plane, pilgrim.

That sort of cost-benefit analysis is familiar: in brutal terms, means it's okay for some to die so that the rest of us can get on with business. In some areas, they call it 'collateral damage'; but nobody ever wants to be part of that damage. However, that is a viable frame of reference needed to maintain modern society and business growth: mining deaths are often horrendously high, but the diggers keeps digging; thousands die on the roads, but few will give up their car, and so on. Valid arguments, up to a point, but which break down when we recall that very few want to be miners, and, unless you're drunk, you have control of your car.

But, we're all travellers, of one sort or another, and often at the mercy of providers of all persuasions.

From that perspective and for some time now, it is patently obvious we have all been at greater risk of dying when commuting on buses and trains. Significantly, however, when in-flight mobile phone use is scheduled to fly, the actual risk of attack may not be too different to that for a bus or train, but survivability of any passenger is so unlikely as to be non-existent; which means, in effect, the risk of dying on a plane will soon be greater.

Management of any business includes the eternal need for risk assessment, so what else can be done to reduce that risk?

Well, consider this: some forty years ago, a then little-known consumer activist, Ralph Nader, published Unsafe at Any Speed, the book that tore the hood off automobile safety in America. In perhaps the first concerted attack on The Big Three automakers - GM, Ford and Chrysler - Mr Nader showed how well established design faults were a cause for concern and of passenger death. His book made a big impact: ultimately, the Big Three were obliged to make production changes to improve automobile safety.

There's no time, however, to wait for another book because terrorists have exploited the well established design flaw/weakness/oversight - take your pick - of cell phones for years.

And that's why the phone makers must act: first, because of the increased risk of death to all travellers and, second, corporate management knows about the problem and published history. It's probably too late to do anything about the millions of existing phones - which, over time, will be replaced anyway - but all new phones should have embedded software - a simple electronic switch - that automatically prevents tampering with its circuitry or operation, preferably to the point of rendering the unit useless and beyond repair. Considering the growth in air traffic, the market size for cell phones and the enormous profits enjoyed by manufacturers - with uninformed consumers in the middle - the financial risk for airlines, communications providers and the phone companies must be in peril as soon as one passenger aircraft is blown to bits. Quite frankly, in these days of uncertainty it's no longer an option, nor very smart, for management to sit on its hands, waiting for proof that cell phones are unsafe at any speed.

Moreover, the clock is ticking and, like I said, only a terrorist wants to see passengers wake up to live out - and die in - their worst nightmare.

Keep on Flying With Frequent Flyer Miles

In an attempt to encourage customer loyalty, most major airlines these days have whats called a "frequent flyer program." These programs reward customers with points, or "miles" as they like to call them, that can be redeemed for free flights, upgrades, and other nice perks. As you can probably guess, miles are earned by flying on the program's carrier. Most programs give you one "mile" for each actual mile spent in flight. There's usually a minimum number of miles that you will earn per segment, which would apply to short puddle jumper flights. Also, you will usually earn more points when you buy a first class ticket.

The major frequent flyer programs in the US are American Airlines AAdvantage, United Mileage Plus, Northwest WorldPerks, Delta SkyMiles, Continental OnePass, and US Airways Dividend Miles. Frequent flyer programs are free to join. You can usually fill out an application right when you check in for a flight. The best program for any given person depends on multiple factors, such as who the carriers are at your local airport or the airports you visit most frequently. For example, if you lived in Detroit, where Northwest has its hub, it would make sense to join the Northwest WorldPerks program. Its best to join one program and do all of your flying on that program's carrier. This is because you generally cannot transfer mileage you earn from one program to another.

There are several things you can do to maximize the number of miles you earn. For example, intentionally booking an itinerary with more segments can in some cases get you more miles with little or no difference in the price of the tickets. Booking an itinerary with connections that are further away can also make a difference. Also, be sure to use your frequent flyer account on business trips; even though the boss is paying, you are still the one who earns the miles.

One last piece of advice: be sure to check the expiration rules of your program carefully. In recent years, the airlines have quietly reduced the amount of time of inactivity before your miles go poof. For example, on December 31st 2007, United Mileage Plus miles will expire after 18 months of inactivity instead of 36. American Airlines AAdvantage and Delta Skymiles have taken similar steps this year. The phrase "use them or lose them" fits nicely here. If you have enough miles for a trip, put them to use sooner rather than later.

Honeymoon Registry Tips and Ideas

Honeymoon registries are in vogue now and for good reason. Brides and grooms are older than ever. They'll often have most of the items from a traditional registry and are forced to only upgrade. Couples too have always craved a special connection with their guests and, with the proliferation of honeymoon registries, have found that easier than ever. If you want that extra touch of personalization, then maybe the honeymoon registry is right for you. As you get underway, here are a few ideas to keep in mind. Your registry should reflect your personalities. We can't stress enough how much more your guests will appreciate a registry that sounds like you. We've thrown in some tips on respectfully spreading the word about your registry in #10. For our cruise and all-inclusive honeymooners, we dedicate #8 to you.

1. If you're the outdoorsy types, then don't forget to plan events like horseback riding, snorkeling, boating, parasailing and swimming with the dolphins. Put them on your registry because guests love these. Be specific about them too: "We'll boat to Molokini Crater for an afternoon of snorkeling!" is better than just "Snorkeling".

2. Like to eat? Don't we all, but your honeymoon is a time to really do it up, so let that show. Mention restaurants by name or the type of cuisine in the title: "Dinner by candlelight at Gramercy Tavern" is better than just "Dinner." You probably won't want to plan all your meals in advance, so you'll have to be a little more general with some. Try "We'll Dine on the Beach" and mention the sand between your toes in the description. Or name whose choice it'll be for a dinner on a whim.

3. Nightlife is another big honeymoon expense and your guests who enjoy a bit of nightlife themselves will just love these. Do a little research and find out where you'll go out and what people drink there: Is there a house specialty? Some of these are easier than others. If you're in Cancun, then "Margaritas at Laguna Grill" is a winner rather than "Drinks". You can also specify times, like "A Bottle of Wine at Sunset" will do the trick for a great add-on gift.

4. Airfare may be your biggest expense. It is usually close family members that make a dent in this one, mainly because it's hard to personalize. Rather than "Contribution to Airfare", it's a good idea to break up the trip into time or miles in the air. So "400 Miles in the Air" might cost $125. If you want to get even more personal and you know your guests will like it, try something like "One Inglenook and one in-flight magazine in the sky" as a description (you may not have room in the title.) You probably don't want to have a quantity of 8 or 10 for that, lest your guests picture you arriving at your honeymoon destination loaded. You can also put a Getting to as an item near the beginning of your registry and a Getting Home at the end. That way you can break this big expense in half.

5. Your hotel is another big budget category. Usually you'll want to break this down into one-night stays. "A night in our Ocean-Front Villa", followed by a personal description like "We're staying at Nirvana on the Beach in Negril with the ocean nearly at our door! The sun sets directly across the water!" If you're staying in luxury accommodations, then it's ok to break it up into two categories, like the "One night in New York" and an "Upgrade to the Suite" type items, each for half the cost of a night's stay, especially if you're having a relatively small wedding. Expecting to sell out of 14 $400 hotel room items with just 80 guests might mean you haven't put enough meals and activities on your registry.

6. There are plenty of miscellaneous items to remember too. Rather than "Suntan Lotion and other beach stuff", go with "Save our Skin!" and mention sunglasses in the description if you want a cheap pair for out on the sand. If you have to kennel a pooch, then go with a variation of "The B&B for Dino" and upload a photo of Dino for that item. Don't forget gas for the rental, maps and tour guides. Try these under a Necessities type title, and mention, "We don't want to get lost!" What about taking a limousine to the airport and back? It may be a luxury you wouldn't do for yourselves, but you may have a cousin who thinks it's time you were pampered. Don't forget the spa trips. These are usually one of the first items off the registry, so plan on a massage or two. You'll find other suggestions for this category when you're creating your registry.

7. Pricing is important. Make sure there is a full range of prices for your items. Make sure you have enough small items on your registry that can accommodate all budgets, but also so that your guests can put together a group of items as well. You'll have guests who will give you a night stay and a bottle of wine at sunset, to be helpful and personal at the same time. But don't shy away from the big-ticket items too. Think of what you're spending per head for the wedding. Some guests may try to match this as a guideline. You may have some close friends who really want to shower you as well, and will find a way.

8. For a cruise and all-inclusive resorts where nearly everything is paid for, don't just put two items airfare and hotel (or cruise.) Most importantly, remember that those meals and drinks aren't free; you're paying for them with the cost of the hotel. Price your hotel item like you would if you weren't staying at an all-inclusive. This is especially easy if you're lucky enough that the resort gives you the option of going all-inclusive or not. If they don't, then look at the cost of neighboring resorts and their restaurants. It's a little more work but you want to get it as close as you can. Then check the prices for a snorkeling trip from a non-all-inclusive and include that as an item. Then you can put in the extras like you would normally as in the "miscellaneous" listed above. If you've included enough dinners and drinks, then you'll find that the total is larger than what you're spending for your all-inclusive, that it's inflating your registry. That's because you're getting a discount for your all-inclusive dollar. You can then reduce your hotel item by that amount so that it matches what you're actually paying, or you can reduce each item's cost to reflect your discount (if you're saving 10%, then reduce each item that's included by 10% in your registry.) Even at nearly all "pay as you go" resorts, you can charge everything to your room. At the end, it's "all-included" in your bill. You're just buying a little freedom to have lunch at the great spot at the other end of the beach and not feel guilty about the free lunch you just missed. No reason to feel like you can't break out those included items for your all-inclusive registry. Same goes for a cruise. Your guests will usually want to connect with a particular memory, so break out particular days or ports-of-call. If you're familiar with the cruise ship, you might try breaking out a particular restaurant or lounge where you'll spend some time. "We'll live it up in the Palladium Lounge!" is more personal than "Cruise Donation" any day.

9. Upload your own photos. We've included plenty for you to find what you need for most items, but a few of your own will really help. The web is an endless source of photos, but don't forget ones you've taken yourself. You can upload your own photos after you've saved your registry.

10. Getting the word out gracefully is a challenge. If you have a wedding website, you can link straight to your registry from there. After you create a registry, we'll send you the link to your registry to include in emails if you want to let close friends and family know. They can help spread the word. We'll also send you the code for a "Smart Button" that you can put into your own website that will take your guests to your registry when they click on it! If you don't have a website, another great way to tactfully get the word out is to mention it on Facebook or MySpace. Think about setting up a wedding Facebook and MySpace too! You can then upload honeymoon photos so your guests who shared in your wedding and honeymoon can follow along.

To sum up: Personalize, personalize, personalize!!! Let your humor through too. Being a little tongue-in-cheek is great, if it's you. That goes for being a little risque too, so long as you have your guests in mind. If they expect it from you, great! They'll want to see it.

Cheap holidays to Tenerife are clearly a big draw to those of us keen to escape the grim British weather, but could there be more to it than this? Christmas is getting bigger every year and the pressure to get it right is immense. A Tenerife Christmas can remove such hassles, and more. That's why I've compiled a list of ten aspects of Christmas hell and how jetting off on a sunny holiday to Tenerife will turn them all around!

1) In the UK: Presents and shopping

Us Brits spend an average of £384 on 18 Christmas presents. Significantly more than you might be spending on your whole Tenerife holiday!

In Tenerife: Spanish souvenirs

It's impossible to list all the Spanish souvenirs you could find for your loved ones, but here are five of the most popular items you could pick up whilst on holiday in Tenerife:

For daytime fun, the main beach of Playa de las Americas is where the party people go to recharge their batteries before the next clubland assault and when the sun goes down you can head to Enramada Beach near La Caleta, where Chiringuito Beach Club hosts parties at the weekend. Many revellers choose to camp on the beach at Las Galletas, bringing their own food and drinks and listening to music into the small hours. Christmas in Tenerife is such fun!

6) In the UK: Christmas lunch

First of all, whoever's cooking is incredibly stressed, and claims you have no idea how much work there is to do (if you try and help then you're inevitably doing it all wrong). This leads to petty arguments and numerous kitchen disasters. Meanwhile one member of the family has suddenly decided to become a vegan without telling anyone and refuses to eat a thing, glaring grumpily while everyone else tucks into their turkey.

Food in Tenerife is very tasty and a lot less stressful than Christmas dinner. Tapas are Spain's appetizers, scrummy little dishes which are often flavoured with garlic, chillies or paprika, cumin, salt, pepper or saffron. It often comes with seafood such as anchovies, sardines or mackerel in olive oil with tomatoes and sometimes peppers or olives. On your Tenerife holiday you can also sample many delicious tropical fruits like mangoes, paw paw and 'platanos fritos' - fried bananas.

Saccharine Coca Cola adverts, endless repeats of 'Only Fools and Horses', soap extravaganzas and 'Celebrity' Christmas specials.

For goodness sake, forget TV and get out there onto the lively Tenerife singles scene. If anything's going to boost your sprits at Christmas it's a sizzling holiday romance!
